As we bid farewell this year to some of our beloved faculty members, we also welcome new people who will bring new colors to the Department. Through this article, get to know a little bit more about the newest members of the DES family.

Engr. Joemer A. Adorna, Jr. officially started his stint at the Department as Assistant Professor 2 on May 24. But prior to this, he was already a regular face in the Department working as a researcher under Dr. Jey-R Ventura for a project on the development of polyhydroxybutyrate-based bioplastic composites. A BS Chemical Engineering cum laude graduate from Malayan Colleges Laguna, he pursued his MS studies in the same field here in UPLB, graduating in 2019. Sir Joemer shared that because he has a lot of friends who are also teachers and who find this career fulfilling, he was inspired to become one, too.

Appointed during the same time is Sir Glenson, also as Assistant Professor 2. Hailing from Talisay, Batangas, Asst. Prof. Glenson R. Panghulan obtained his BS Materials Engineering and MS Materials Science and Engineering degrees in 2017 and 2021, respectively, both from UP Diliman. While studying, he was also involved in several research projects on surface modification and polymerization employing plasma technologies. When asked why he ventured into teaching, Sir Glenson replied that he loves sharing ideas and knowledge, a passion he discovered from tutoring as well as from guiding high school and undergraduate students in doing their own research.

Meet Dr. Hector R. Lim, appointed as Assistant Professor 6 on July 1. Born in Aparri, Cagayan, he obtained his BS Chemical Engineering degree in 2002 from Cagayan State University; his Master of Engineering degree in 2010 from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand; and his PhD in Engineering and Technology (Civil Engineering and Technology) degree in 2017 from Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, Thailand. Doc Lim has served many roles in both the public and private sector, here in the country as well as in Thailand. With this experience, he hopes to actively contribute to the research and extension activities of the Department.

Another new PhD in the Department is Dr. Liza B. Patacsil, Associate Professor 4 effective August 1. An LB native, she finished both her BS and MS Chemical Engineering degrees here in UPLB. Here’s an interesting trivia about Doc Liza: she was a faculty of the Department from 1997-2005 but eventually left to pursue a second MS degree in Environmental Sanitation from University of Ghent in Belgium, graduating in 2008. She then went back to the country for her PhD in Environmental Engineering in UP Diliman, obtaining her degree in 2012. Prior to her return to the Department, Doc Liza served as a professor and a research director in Malayan Colleges Laguna. She hopes to bring back with her to the Department her profound knowledge and experience as a teacher, a researcher, and an administrator.

Rounding up the list is the most recently hired faculty member, Sir Lester Raj A. Somera, appointed as Instructor 2 last September 1. Sir Lester is also a graduate of BS Materials Engineering from UP Diliman (another trivia: he and Sir Glenson are batchmates!). As of now, Sir Lester is still completing his master’s thesis on recycling of waste fishing nets as a filament for 3D printers, for the degree of MS Materials Science and Engineering. Considering himself an introvert, Sir Lester did not see himself as someone who would teach. Nevertheless, as the newest member of the Department, he hopes to gain new experience and to grow to love the profession as well.

Let’s warmly welcome them to the Department and hope that we can finally see them (in person 😊) very soon!
